our house: tile & grout!

just a quick update before we head out of town.
yes, that's China. in a matter of hours.
can i get a yahoo??!!!

we've been working on painting and tiling still.
turns out when you have multiple rooms to paint & tile,
multiple coats of both primer and paint,
and multiple steps in every process for everything we do,
it takes awhile to get it all done!

weird.

so here are just a couple new pictures of our lovely tile!
and if, for some reason, you don't find it lovely like we do,
then just lie and say it is.
thanks :)

ahhhh...nothing like fresh grout...

next time we chat, we'll either be in the land of asians
(not sure if the blogosphere works over there very well) or back home!

don't forget about or
miss us too much!!

christmas 2011 {pt. 3 aka last one, i promise}

ah, finally. christmas day.
we started the morning by opening a few more presents with my parents, having some breakfast real quick, and sending the mr. off to work (boo).

Jae's day mostly consisted of work.
while Jae was at work, my day consisted of going to my sister's house to see what her kiddos got from santa, going to church, taking a nap, and having my other sister and her kiddos come over to open their presents.

mom & dad opening presents.
i just love dad's pose in this.
Jae said he looks like he should be in a
Beatles magazine or something haha

mom & dad with their gifts from us
{can opener - very needed, 'HYDE' brand putty knife (which is my dad's name),
a set of 4 cat mugs for mom (long story haha) and a little christmas magnet/ornament}

Jae opening his present from vintage pearl
(i tried to convince him i got him pearls.
he didn't believe me)

well, he was right. no pearls for Jae.
i got him some new cufflinks, customized with an "H"

new jammies!

Jae got done with work, and we headed up to his mom's house for christmas dinner and more present opening with his family. it was a beautiful ham meal (which jae ate his serving plus more of) with her usual - rainbow jello (no, i didn't get a picture of it before it was being eaten. next time). not to mention my favorite part - the homemade rolls.

have i ever told you how much i love rolls? that could probably be a post all by itself. i might have to do that...

anyway, here's the rest of our christmas evening in pictures:

the lovely table pre-meal

mr. claus himself, sneaking into the candies

mr. Ben sporting his new kicks
(with eyes closed! very tricky)

Jae opening his new toy - a miter saw!

i think Blue had the right idea

i'll try my best to shorten my christmas post(s) for next year, i promise :)
hope you all enjoyed your holiday weekend as much we did.

christmas 2011 {pt. 2}

on saturday, christmas eve, we really didn't have any plans with family. all of the plans were for the day before and the day after. so jae and i took advantage and worked on the house for a few hours, getting in some more painting time.

i suggested, since we didn't have any particular dinner plans, that we go out to dinner! on a real date! not just like, wendy's or subway.

so, after getting all showered and perdy, out we went! to where?
olive garden, of course :)

we both decided to be a bit daring and veer away from our usuals to try something new. and they were pretty good choices! daredevils, we are.

my choice - baked chicken romano
(it's one of their specials right now; you should really go try it
before it's gone!)
jae enjoying a scrumptious breadstick.
you can kind of see what his food was..
something seafood with shells and
things like that.
why, black tie mousse cake, of course!
my personal fav

after dinner, we drove our stuffed selves back home to start our christmas day a bit early and open our presents for eachother. jae had to work christmas day (like ALL day, but whatever) so we decided to do presents christmas eve night rather than cram them all in in the morning before he left for work. and honestly, it was really nice. just the two of us, sitting in bed, opening our gifts for eachother. i enjoyed it a lot.

with all our $$ being sucked into our money pit of a house
that we bought this year and our upcoming trip overseas,
we opted for the stockings-only approach for christmas this year.
jae displaying our stash

i've decided i like christmas eve even more than christmas day. it's a holiday, but the day before the big holiday. so it's exciting and fun, but you have so much more to look forward to in the day to come, too! know what i mean? i'm not crazy right? good. glad you agree.

christmas 2011 {pt. 1}

christmas this year was a little bit abnormal for us, it seemed. between family schedules, work schedules, and family drama, it wasn't quite what we expected.

but it was a great christmas, nonetheless! definitely memorable.

so i'm going to break this down by days. and since pictures usually do better at the talking than i, here are a few of the highlights from our holiday weekend, starting with friday, the 23rd.

my family had a breakfast-for-dinner dinner, which was amazing (my idea, thank you very much!). we gathered at my sister, kellie's, house and made some delicious pancakes and french toast, with all the extras of course.

daddy & i making some pancake mix.
it's a very serious ordeal.

cinnamon french toast.
my tummy is growling as we speak...

papa fred is the pancake specialist.
i tried to get him to smile for the camera
and this is the best i got.
he wouldn't cooperate.
(he was pretty much telling me to get lost)

haha i couldn't resist posting this.
oh that hana. this is so classic her.
she's kind of a freak!
and we love it.

the little people table.

the big people table.
jae thought i was zoomed in, hence the leaning over.
turns out i wasn't zoomed in,
so jae just looks awesome basically.

i  LOVE breakfast.
and those cute name tags my niece quinn makes!
don't you just love little people handwriting?

and what is any family dinner without dessert?
this is literally a carton of ice cream dumped out on a place
with melted chocolate drizzled on top.
mmm.

a {christmas} tender mercy

life can be hard sometimes.

sometimes it feels like we are trying our hardest to do what's right.
and then crap happens.
{like you get $1000 worth of kitchen cabinets stolen
and insurance won't cover them! but i'm not still bitter about it...}

well, today i was reminded how important it is to have faith.
and just believe your good works will all be worth it in the end.
and you will be rewarded.

when leaving today to drive down to our house to do some more work,
i found this stuck in my car door handle:

confused, i opened it & showed jae.
he, too, was confused.
and we were both so surprised at what we found..

no note, no signature, no name.
just a plain christmas card with a $100 bill.
and that, my friends, is what we call the true spirit of christmas.

thank you to our anonymous donor.
i will never forget this.
i hope & pray you all feel the spirit of christmas like jae & i have experienced today.

christmas cookies 2011

every year we start our christmas celebrations by
decorating sugar cookies with Jae's family.
this year was no exception!
and here's the proof:

my cookies. one of each frosting color.
i wasn't feeling the most creative..don't judge.

the mr.'s cookies.
yes, he's more artistic than i am.
audree & baby ben - ben's sporting some frosting lipstick!

jae found it amusing to take lots of the same,
not-so-great pics. as seen above.

tyler, chelsea, and blue.
chels likes to hold blue like a baby.
and i have a feeling blue likes it too.
one of my favorite parts of the decor -
chelsea's displaying the
happy birthday jesus flags!
(oh yeah, we also frosted some cupcakes)

can't wait for the rest of the festivities to come!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
I WISH THE BEST TO YOU ALL!

a bit of christmas a few days early

i walked out to my car this morning around 645am to leave for work.
there was snow on it, so i opened the door to start it and then was going to scrape it off.

well, when i briefly slid in my seat to turn the car on real quick before scraping,
i noticed a cute little note stuck in the middle of my steering wheel:

i went ahead and started the car, a bit befuddled by the note.
as i always do, as soon as i turned the car on,
i turned down the music so it wouldn't be too loud in the early morning hours
and turned on the defrost before going to scrape.

i looked around and couldn't see any present.
i thought 'no, this isn't a new car'.
checked the back seat...
nothing.
well, i knew the note was from Jae.
maybe he just wanted to leave me a cute note for kicks & giggles?
then i glanced at my dash, where the screen displays the name of whatever music is playing.
it was on track 1 (not where i remembered leaving it yesterday)
and it read
"it's beginning to look a lot like christmas".
i definitely didn't have a christmas CD in my player before!

so i turned up the volume and of course -
Michael Buble's new christmas CD was playing!

oh that tricky mr. Jae!
he had gone out last night, after i fell asleep and switched out the CD, putting my new
christmas CD in for me to listen to for a few days before christmas is over
instead of waiting and giving it to me on christmas day.
he's a smarty.

i LOVE the CD! i even brought it into work with me and have been listening to it while i work.
do you guys have it yet?
it's fabulous.
track numbers 5, 7, & 10 are my favs.
what are yours?

i love that mr. Jae :)

christmas Q&A

got this fun idea here.

1. Egg nog or hot chocolate? definitely hot chocolate. egg nog = ick.
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? wrap!
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? i grew up having colored lights, but for my own house i think i might do less color. i usually go for a more simple look.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? we always had it in 2 doorways growing up, and yes, i want it in my house too!
5. When do you put your decorations up? anytime AFTER thanksgiving :)
6. What is your favorite holiday dish? ham. mmmmm. and a big breakfast on christmas. which isn't really holiday-specific, but i love it all the same.
7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? getting my new bike. i was around 8 i think. and my sweet rain sweatsuit the same year. it was awesome.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? honestly i'm not sure. i think i held onto it for awhile, thinking i still heard him in the middle of the night. maybe 8 or 9?
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?  we'd open the gift from our uncle on christmas eve when we were young. now that we don't get those, we don't open anything on christmas eve. except i want to start an open-pj's-on-christmas-eve thing...
10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? we've only been able to decorate our own tree once since being married, but we just had white lights, gold tinsel stuff, and random, mix-match ornaments
11. Snow! Love it or dread it? love it on christmas, hate it pretty much all the other days!
12. Can you ice skate? umm it's like riding a bike, right? it's been awhile, but i'd go with yes.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? i got a huge stuffed bear one year from my uncle. it was soo soft and had a baby pink ribbon tied around the neck. it was almost the size of me! i LOVED it. still have it.
14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you? being with family. making good memories and laughing a lot. remembering why we celebrate in the first place..
15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? hmmm. don't know if i have a favorite. hot chocolate? ooh and reese's peanut butter trees!
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? acting out the story of our Savior's birth with my family while my dad reads the story from the Bible and my mom takes pictures.
17. What tops your tree? a star!
18. Which do you prefer: giving or receiving? giving. i love going out and getting things for other people and watching them open their presents i've given. it feels so good :)
19. Candy canes: yuck or yummy? usually yuck. depends on the flavor-style.
20. Favorite Christmas show? muppet christmas carol!! and elf!
21. Saddest Christmas song? not sure i have one...
22. What is your favorite Christmas song? one of my favs is faith hill's 'where are you christmas?' from the grinch. also love anything christmas that michael buble or josh groban sing.

close to my {heart}

i think i mentioned this in a post a couple of weeks ago, but in case you didn't hear, the mr. and i are going to be spending our anniversary this year in China!

picture from my first stay in China

it's been a long-time coming, been put off and put off a few hundred times, and now, even though we've felt really awesome about going right now, things happened with our house, etc that made us question (again) if this is the right time to go, if we can afford it (even though yes, we do get away with paying very little to fly and we have a place to stay - my sister lives there), and so on and so on. but i put my foot down and said i am not pushing this trip back any more! we will go and we will deal with everything and we will like it!

so going, we are. we leave the end of this month. you may or may not know, but i've been there before. in fact, i lived there for about 3 months. exactly 3 years ago today, i was living there. i grew to love it, and i've been super excited ever since jae and i got married to take him back to visit and show him the ropes! (as if i know all there is to know about china, ha!)

anyway, as i was driving the other day, i was thinking about our upcoming trip and about china and about my time spent there before. for some reason, when i think about those months i lived there, it's a very emotional thing for me. i guess i shouldn't say 'for some reason'....i know why. it was a very emotional time for me in my life.

when i decided to go to china, it was a very spur of the moment thing. from the time we (my family and i) decided i was going until the time i left was only about 3 weeks time. getting my passport, plane tickets, visa, getting things worked out at home with my bills and my job...it was a whirlwind! looking back, it was kind of a crazy thing i did! but i know everything fell into place for me for a reason and i was meant to go.

without getting into too much detail, some pretty heavy, hard things had gone on during the couple of months leading up to then. at the time, i don't think i even really knew how bad of shape i was in.

anyway, i got everything taken care of, got on a plane, and said goodbye to all i'd known and headed to a new, strange place really far away. i spent the first week or so getting used to the time change (they were 12 hours ahead of utah....really throws you off!). my sister and her husband had two kids at the time, and she had her third just a few weeks after i arrived. i spent a lot of my time with the two older kids, taking them to weekly playdates, etc. while my sister stayed home with the brand new baby. i enjoyed it a lot. i met lots of new people from (literally) all over the world, who quickly became good friends. i taught a few english classes and made some money. i spent the holidays there, where they don't really celebrate them like we do, which was interesting. i got my hair washed almost weekly (it was so cheap and wonderful!). i explored, rode the subway a lot, hailed taxis every day. basically became a whole different person! a city girl. with two kids!

although i had lots of people around me almost all the time.
although i loved where i was and the experiences i was getting.
although i loved being with my sister.
although i had tons of fun.
i was empty inside.
i felt really alone.

i was in that place that i think everyone experiences at some point in their lives, where you take a step back and ask yourself who the heck am i? what am i doing with myself and my life? where am i headed? you know, a soul searching kind of time. heck, i even chopped my hair off! something i swore i'd never do again after going through the growing-it-back-out thing.

you know how certain songs or artists remind us of certain times/events/people? well for me, that was avril lavigne and china. they went hand in hand. maybe that sounds a little strange, but seriously, avril's music got me through some rough times in china.

her song 'innocence', in particular, was very well worn in by the time i left china. it was one of those songs that it didn't matter what mood i was in, that was my go-to song. mad, sad, happy, sleepy, whatever it was, that song was on repeat a lot.

walking the streets of Shanghai with my ipod going
have you had songs like that? times in your life where just one song was almost part of your being because you constantly had it running through your thoughts? that was that song for me.

in case you haven't ever heard it, you should listen to it. not your usual boy-hating, girl power kind of avril song. it basically talks about being ok. finally reaching that point where life is good, truly good. and you can see that goodness and you can enjoy it. and you know you're alright.

i'm not even sure why i'm writing all of this. i guess i never really laid it all out on the line. never expressed all my feelings about this experience until now, and i felt i needed to. it's a bit scattered, so i apologize, but i'm just writing it for me, mostly, i suppose. i realize now how important those 3 months were for me. for my soul and heart to heal and be ready for what was ahead. i needed to be away from life for a bit and have those "you'll be fine" words pounded into my head a few thousand times.

i'm so grateful for a Heavenly Father who knows what's up. who let's us go through trials and tough times but is also there to help us keep moving through them and onto bigger and better things. i am so grateful for my husband. for the person he is and for the person he helps me to be. i am grateful for the chance to return to china with him, and share that place with him that was so special to me.

xoxo.
